The Poignant Backdrop to the Dinners
Mother Nature can be as cruel as she is generous. On the Victoria Day Weekend of 2015 Prince Edward County was subjected to a terrible killer frost. Some say it was the coldest night with frost in almost 100 years.
The spring had been pretty benign up to that point. All the vineyards had de-hilled and re-trellised their vines, and in most cases buds had been emerging quickly. So a night of no wind and sub-zero weather proved devastating, with many growers losing 70-90% of their fruiting buds. When that happens there is essentially no crop and certainly little chance of making a single variety wine. Most of our wineries had to rely heavily on grapes and juice from Niagara to survive.
At By Chadsey’s Cairns we were incredibly fortunate. We only suffered about a 25% loss. Our proximity to Lake Ontario, meant that there was natural air turbulence produced by the difference in temperature between the water and the air. Our basic temperature stayed at least a couple of degrees above vineyards farther inland. So, when we lit our fires in the middle of the night they were able to add to the air movement and less frost attached itself to the vines. In addition, our green growth was not as advanced as in the warmer interior vineyards, so the buds were less vulnerable.
